1. Risperidone is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic used to treat urgent psychomotor agitation, schizophrenia and acute episodes of mania in bipolar disorder.
2. Risperidone works via blockade of post-synaptic dopamine D2 receptors, and serotonin antagonism (responsible for its relatively low incidence of extrapyramidal effects)
3. Side effects include akathisia and tremor, fatigue and sleepiness, weight gain and diabetes and constipation. Other
effects include sexual dysfunction, galactorrhea, breast symptoms, and reduced bone mineral density.
4. Avoid with dopamine-blocking antiemetics and QT-prolonging drugs (quinine, macrolides, SSRIs, etc.)
5. Long-term use may lead to permanent tardive dyskinesia.
